BeerAlchemy Touch - update

Work is moving forward on BeerAlchemy for the iPhone although there's still a lot to do. The recipe/batch editing and inventory functions are done but I still need to do a bunch of other stuff - not least the networking code for syncing etc.

The main reason for this update, however is to ask a question. Realistically, BA for the iPhone will come out in the same sort of time frame as the final version of the 3.0 SDK from Apple. The SDK update will be a free update for iPhone users but iPod Touch users will have to pay for it ($10 I think). There are things I'd like to use from the 3.0 SDK but it's not a dealbreaker if I don't - I could make do with 2.x.

So make up my mind for me... as potential users are you definitely NOT going to update to 3.0 when it comes out?

Steve, I doubt that there's an iPhone/iPod touch user on the planet who won't upgrade. Go for it! The new API's look amazing.

Do whatever you need to do to make the best software you can make. Most people (myself included as a Touch user) will be upgrading.

Wow, I didn't know this many people read this! OK, I get the idea...I can use the new SDK if I want.

yeah, we read it. We wouldn't be here if BA wasn't such a great app though. Great work Steve!

Been awhile since I checked the blog for updates on the iPhone version. What a surprise to see screenshots and several progress updates! I can't wait for this to come out. As a longtime BA user, I'll gladly pay for this version, keep up the great work.

Not only will I upgrade to 3.0 on my iPod touch but I might wait for the update to purchase a BA license (currently using it in demo mode). Been using BrewMath on my 2.2.1 iPod touch and it's rather helpful. But what I'm waiting for is BeerAlchemy Touch.

BA on the iPhone and BA on the Mac are different things and the Mac version license doesn't include the iPhone version.

@Steve There will still be a connection between the two, no? I do find BA useful as is but I want to try BA (Mac)<->BA(Touch) sync before I commit to both.

There will be a sync connection between the two but the two can also work as separate products. You don't need one to use the other and there will be other ways of getting recipes on and off the device that won't require the desktop app.

@Steve Thanks for the confirmation. They're separate products but sync with BA Touch is what tips the scale for me in terms of added value.

I'll upgrade to 3.0. At that point I will figure out whether I want to get an iphone version of BA.

I can't wait to see it - is the release time frame still right around 3.0, i.e. June 17th?

Aaron, it's currently still unfinished so won't be available this month. It is in a usable form though so the beta testers are giving it a try out.

Right now I'm working on reducing it's memory footprint and improving the speed of the app. I'll then get on with working out syncing (on both the iPhone and Mac sides).

Currently the application still builds (and runs) on the 2.x SDK so should run on all devices.

Sorry to bug you, but wondering if there is any update on the timeframe for this? Currently use brewpal - really like it but would love to have something that works with Beer Alchemy on the mac so that I do not have two separate programs I am using.

Agreed with Adam. In fact, access to a beta version would be very useful in terms of my purchasing decisions and brewing plans.

Work is still ongoing - I'm currently working on the sync functionality and hope to have an early working version of that in a week or so.

I like to keep beta testing groups quite small as it's a lot easier to roll back mistakes when the groups are smaller. Also public betas are not really possible on the iPhone/iPod Touch as you have to register each test device with Apple and there's a limit on how many you can have.
