Why BrewMath doesn't have a timer.

Just took a look at the comments on the US AppStore (I'm British so I use the UK store by default). It seems a few people have asked for BrewMath to have a hop timer. There's a very good reason why it doesn't (well I think it's a good reason). Apple doesn't allow third party applications, such as BrewMath to run in the background. When answer a call, your program gets booted out. Can you guess what this means if you have a hop timer running and you get a call? Yep, no timer.

BeerAlchemy Touch won't have one either.

The app should have access to the clock, though, no?

It could tell you "how long until next addition" every time it gets focus.

Indeed, my understanding is that when the call is over the app that was dumped gets relaunched so you would think it was a matter of recording what the app was doing when it was killed and then picking up where you left off. What happens if the hop timer runs out whilst you're on a call? You miss the hop addition because the app isn't running. I could tell you that you'd missed it but that may not be much use...

how about adding an event with an alarm to the calendar? events with reminders are allowed to notify system-wide (I think). you could create a "brewing" calendar to keep things separated from the user's main calendars.

No go on that one I'm afraid. The current 2.x SDK doesn't allow third party apps to add calendar events.

Too bad about calendar events. It'd be really neat to have BAT add reminders (rack to secondary, etc.).

Would it be possible to save a timer to a web server, then use the server to send a text message for each hop addition via SMS?

That wouldn't work for those of us using iPod Touch as we can't get SMS messages. Honestly if there is to be such a feature Apple needs to allow for either programs running at least some basic features in the background (and having a way for the user to kill them if we like) or for 3rd party apps to have access to the calendar system with user permission.
