Broken Powerbook

It seems like the power in jack on my Powerbook has died so it's going to have to go off to get fixed - hopefully John Lewis (a department store in the UK) won't take too long. In the meantime I still have the PowerMac but that's a bit heavy to drag along on the commute to and from work!

Hopefully the next release won't be delayed too much by this but I guess I'll have an opportunity to work through my backlog of books until I get the powerbook back.

New release on the way!

Well, finally version 1.4 of BeerAlchemy is getting nearer. Our crack team of beta testers finally has the beta version of the new release and once they've kicked the tires and given it a good outing it will be released to the public.

What's in the new release?

Well, this time we decided to concentrate on usability. We also found time to add quite a few features that had been popular requests. Amongst the highlights are:-

* Use any unit, anywhere. Although we all have our favorite units, quite often you come across a recipe in a different unit. For example, you use US Gallons and lbs but the recipe is in liters and kilos. Now BeerAlchemy can accept data entry in any unit at any point of the program. If you enter an ingredient in kilos but your preferred unit is pounds, BeerAlchemy will automatically convert the value to your preferred units.
* Proper lbs and oz support. No more decimals (not unless you want them). BeerAlchemy now properly presents weights in lbs and oz and can accept entry in that format.
* Ingredient descriptions. You asked for them so now you have them - displayed as tooltips when you hover the mouse over an ingredient.
* New Bitterness Formulas. BeerAlchemy now supports Tinseth, Rager, Garetz and Daniels' formulas. It now also lets you modify the adjustment factors that it uses to deal with different hop forms and FWH.

There's a load of other new and improved stuff but for that you'll have to wait until the release. It should be in the next two to three weeks.

Of course, this upgrade will be free to registered users of BeerAlchemy.
